Scots 999 call handler's panic as young son stops breathing after horror seizure

An emergency call handler has spoken of the terrifying moment her young son stopped breathing after his first seizure.

Adele Harty, who herself is a 999 call handler for the Scottish Ambulance Service, found herself on the other end of the phone when her son Elliot suddenly took ill.

The panicked Scots mum, who works in the control room in the west, said she "had no idea" what she was doing when faced with her own crisis.

Little Elliot stopped breathing after taking his first seizure, which was followed by another two frightening seizures as his mum scrambled for help.

Picking up the phone to call 999, her colleague and friend Rebecca who kept her calm while paramedics dashed to the scene in Ayrshire.

The youngster was rushed to University Hospital Crosshouse, in Kilmarnock, and is now back home with his family recovering after the scare.

Sharing pictures of the happy family in a tribute to the team on its public Facebook page, the Scottish Ambulance Service said: "We received a fantastic compliment from one of our call handlers, Adele Harty. She thanks Maybole crew, Joanne Lang and Andy Girvan, along with fellow call handler and friend, Rebecca Bellah."

Adele said: “My son Elliott had a seizure for the first time and stopped breathing followed on by another two seizures. I myself work in the west control room and think I can speak for any parent when we say it's completely different when it's your own. I really had no idea what I was doing at the time.

"The crew were amazing and I honestly can't thank them enough for helping me and my husband through it and getting Elliott out to Crosshouse like they did.

“Makes me even more proud to be part of the Service. Also to my friend Rebecca who was the call handler for me. Never been so happy to hear a familiar voice when I needed it most.

"Elliott is home now and has a new monster truck to keep him happy.”
