Scotrail vow Edinburgh to Glasgow peak time trains will have eight carriages

Christmas may have come early for commuters in Edinburgh after Scotrail vowed to increase the number of carriages on peak time trains to Glasgow by the end of the month.

The boost comes as the train firm prepares to roll out a new timetable on 15 December, which Scotrail says will deliver more seats and services for passengers, as well as a new station in Glasgow.

Overcrowding has been a major issue for Scotrail passengers who frequently use the service between Scotland's two major cities, with one person recalling the day a "woman fainted in the crush".

However, Scotrail bosses have promised that there will now be eight carriages on all of their peak time services between Edinburgh and Glasgow via Falkirk High as part of the changes that will be introduced mid-December.

David Simpson, ScotRail Operations Director, said: "The improvements we are making to our timetable from December will deliver even more benefits for our customers, delivering more seats, more services, and a new station in the north east of Glasgow.

"The £475 million investment in new and upgraded trains and the infrastructure improvements across the country are all part of building the best railway Scotland has ever had."

Bill Reeve, Transport Scotland’s Director of Rail said: "Passengers will welcome many of the changes up and down the country, particularly the additional services in the north east and the new Robroyston station just outside Glasgow. This shows our significant investment is delivering more seats and more services than ever before."
