Scotrail travel havoc continues for Edinburgh and Glasgow commuters as images show heavy train track flooding

Commuters face more chaos today as heavy rainfall has caused major disruptions on the railway.

Flash flooding in Winchburgh, West Lothian, last night has left many passengers stranded as Glasgow to Edinburgh trains were cancelled.

Around 50 services running until lunchtime have already been scrapped.

Services between Dunblane, Alloa and Cowdenbeath are also affected.

Network Rail Scotland said they have been working through the night clearing the flooding after 60 per cent of August's rainfall fell in just a few hours.

They tweeted pictures of the floods and said: "We would like to apologise to everyone caught up in the disruption caused by the flooding at #Winchburgh last night and this morning.

"Sheer volume of rainfall in a short period over whelmed drainage with 60% of August rainfall total falling in just a few hours in some areas.

"We have worked overnight to clear the flood water from the tunnel and work is ongoing to clear the line and get trains running again.

"Colleagues @ScotRail can advise alternative travel options meantime. #Winchburgh."

Last night ScotRail announced the main line between Glasgow and Edinburgh had been closed as a result of the heavy flooding.

At around 6.30am today the wrote on Twitter: "Due to the limited replacement transport we're advising customers to make alternative travel arrangements where possible."

They later announced they had arranged several replacement buses between Edinburgh and Falkirk Grahamston.
