ScotRail to introduce temporary ban on e-scooters in all stations and trains

A temporary ban on e-scooters and other similar devices is set to be introduced by ScotRail on all their trains and stations from next month.

The railway company has noted that they made the decision to ban the devices in order to make sure everyone who travels with them does so "in a safe and friendly environment".

The ban is set to come into affect from Thursday, June 1, 2023, and last for 12 months in total. The ban includes the following lithium-ion powered micro devices:

ScotRail have confirmed that the temporary ban will be reviewed in a years time, "once more data becomes available on the safe operation and transport of these devices, or once any formal legislation comes into effect."

This policy does not apply to personal mobility devices, powered wheelchairs and power assisted bicycles or e-bikes, which are regulated by UK legislation and British Standards.

The company also stated that due to the lithium-ion battery micro devices not adhering to any technical safety standards, the Government cannot produce any UK legislation or standards.

This results in an increased risk of fires caused by the devices, as the battery can be damaged by impact, being overcharged, overheated or designed with manufacturing defects.

E-bikes are permitted for travel on ScotRail services and in stations, as they must comply with a greater number of safety regulations. Mobility aids are not included in this ban either.
