Scotrail to hand out free face masks to passengers at Central and Queen Street stations

Scotrail are to hand out free face masks to passengers as face coverings on public transport becomes mandatory from Monday.

Scotland's rail operator say the face masks will be made available at major stations across the country, including Glasgow Central and Queen Street, 'for a limited period of time'.

Meanwhile, face coverings will also be available 'on request' from a number of other stations across the city.

Scotrail say: "From Monday 22 June, you must cover your face at all stages of your journey with Scotrail, including in stations and on trains.

"To support you through this change, we will make single-use face coverings available from our busiest stations for a limited period of time."

The face masks will be distributed at 'peaks times' at Central and Queen Street stations, as follows:

  • 7am - 9.30am
  • 3.30pm - 6pm

The stations offering face coverings on request in Glasgow and the surrounding area are:

  • Argyle Street
  • Dalmuir
  • Exhibition Centre
  • Hyndland
  • Johnstone
  • Paisley Gilmour Street

Furthermore, there are certain exemptions to the mandatory face covering rule, including if:

  • you are a child under five years old
  • you have a health condition where a face covering would be inappropriate because it would cause difficulty, pain or severe distress or anxiety or because you cannot apply a covering and wear it in the proper manner safely and consistently
  • you have a reasonable need to eat or drink
  • you need to take medication
  • you need to communicate with someone else who relies on lip reading
  • a relevant person, such as a police officer, asks you to remove your face covering
