Scotrail has apologised after customers were left sitting on the floor on a “disgusting” service between Aberdeen and Edinburgh.
Passengers on the train between the North East and the Capital blasted the conditions on the Sunday afternoon route, claiming the oversubscribed carriages had not been cleaned, while some were left without seats.
The rail operator also faced criticism for the cost of tickets and the temperature inside the train, which one passenger described as “roasting hot”.
Posting on Twitter, one wrote: "Currently on the train from Aberdeen to Edinburgh, trying to be environmentally friendly by giving a ridiculous amount of money to @Scotrail rather than drive.
"The train is an absolute disgrace, so many people on it that there are passengers sitting on the floor throughout, it’s filthy and absolutely roasting hot. There’s no catering trolley presumably for Covid reasons but even if there was, it wouldn’t get through the train because there’s no floor space.
"Until public transport is improved, I can totally understand why people prefer to drive. This is a very unpleasant way to spend an afternoon."
The passenger later added: "The floors don’t look like they’ve been cleaned - the mess on them was there when I got on in Aberdeen, the toilets are disgusting and everything is just a bit grubby to be honest.
"Travelling by train is way more expensive than driving - it should be a much better experience."
The rail operator issued an apology for the issues, adding the complaints were "disappointing".
They added: "We are sorry for the uncomfortable journey.
"It is really disappointing to hear as the train was in Aberdeen for a significant amount of time before departure and should have been cleaned."
