Scotrail scraps plans to make toilets free at Queen Street Station

Scotrail will no longer go ahead with plans to remove the fee for using toilets at its railway stations.

Network Rail last year announced they would make the loos free at Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley – two of Scotland's busiest – beginning in April 2019.

ScotRail also began looking into making access free at Glasgow Queen Street, Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William - but now the rail group says Transport Police advised against the move as it would 'increase anti-social behaviour.'

A ScotRail spokesperson said: “After carrying out full safety assessments, gaining feedback from industry partners and assessing the long-term costs, it was established that removing charges was not a viable option.”

The toilet gates have been removed at Queen Street due to ongoing renovation works at the station.

Network Rail dropped toilet charges at 19 stations across the country earlier this year as part of a "series of improvements" – including installing water fountains, more help points, more investment in facilities and improvements for disabled station users."

The public sector body said it wanted to put "passengers first" and help make their journeys "a bit more hassle-free".

In 2017  it was revealed  that Network Rail had made £41m in 10 years from toilet charges.
