Scotrail passengers blast 'horrific' disruption at rammed Edinburgh Waverley

Passengers at Edinburgh rail stations were hugely affected by chaos on the lines after a series of cancellations during the final weekend of the Fringe festival.

Photos that were posted on social media show rammed platforms and overcrowding on trains on routes heading from Edinburgh to Glasgow .

The disruption came during the final weekend of the Fringe, in addition to Scotland’s rugby match against France at Murrayfield .

Videos also show passengers frantically dash for trains in a desperate bid to get home as soon as possible.

One passenger even compared the scenes to that ‘from an apocalypse film’.

Disgruntled customers took out their frustrations on the firm over Twitter as many waited hours to get on board their train home.

Charles Parry said: “What on earth is going on at Waverley ? People kicked off and put back on trains, no information and people crammed in. It’s utterly insane.”

Laura Rooney added: “It’s disgusting how little air there is on the train from Waverley to Glasgow Central . There absolutely no windows on a brand new train…people are almost fainting. And our train left Haymarket after a 20 minute delay.”

Ellen Macpherson said: “Worst journey of my life tonight. 9.21pm train split in two at last minute halving the carriages from Waverley to Glasgow. Hundreds of people were cramming themselves in.

“Get it together, seriously. Someone will be severely injured one of these days.”

Scotrail attributed the disruption to a train fault Linlithgow at around 10.15pm last night. The issue was said to have been resolved at 10.25pm.

Passengers were urged to consider alternative transport as people continued to pour into both Edinburgh stations.

A spokesperson for Scotrail said: “We’re sorry to our customers who experienced disruption and busy services yesterday. We do all that we can to meet demand. Every available train we have was out on the network to get our customers where they need to be.

“Customers delayed by 30 minutes or more are encouraged to claim the money back via our Delay Repay Guarantee on our website or mobile app.”
