ScotRail outperforms rest of UK for train cancellations

SCOTRAIL has the best record for train stop cancellations in the UK, according to recent data.

The publicly owned train operator is outperforming the rest of the UK’s rail services, with only 2% of stops cancelled between August 18, 2024, to August 16, 2025.

In comparison, England had 3.5% of train stops cancelled, Wales had 3.9% and the UK had 3.3% overall, according to data by the Office for Rail and Road.

The North East was the worst region in England, with 4.5% of train stops cancelled, followed by the South West at 4.2% and then the North West at 4%.

The best performing English region was the East Midlands at 3.1%, a 55% higher cancellation rate than the 2% north of the Border.

The analysis comes from the BBC, where the broadcaster calculated the percentage of cancelled stops out of those scheduled for the last 13 periods of data published by the Office of Rail and Road.

Out of all 2549 stations across the UK, 78 were excluded from the analysis due to missing or unreliable data. The BBC’s analysis differs from the cancellation analysis by the Rail Delivery Group, which represents Network Rail and train operators.

In Scotland, the Exhibition Centre stop in Glasgow had the highest percentage of cancellations at 2.8%.

Partick was the second highest at 2.7%, then Edinburgh at 2%, Aberdeen was fourth at 1.9%, followed by Dundee at 1.8%.

Glasgow Central and Queen Street were both at 1.6%, along with Stirling.

Paisley Gilmour Street rounded out the top ten at 0.7%.

SNP MSP Rona MacKay said since the Scottish Government brought ScotRail back into public ownership in 2022, it has gone from “strength to strength”.

She said: “Earlier this year a passenger survey found ScotRail was one of the best performing train operators in the UK with a customer satisfaction rate of 91%.

“Three weeks ago, we scrapped peak rail fares, saving commuters across Scotland hundreds of pounds a year.

“Today we see that cancellations on ScotRail trains are the lowest in UK, with less than half the cancellations proportionally of North East England.

“The SNP is the only party that puts Scotland first – and we will continue to support strong public services like rail so that passengers get the service they deserve.”

ScotRail was nationalised and brought back under public ownership in April 2022, following the Scottish Government's decision not to award a new franchise agreement to the Dutch firm Abellio.
