ScotRail cancel hundreds of trains in lead up to Christmas due to impact of Covid on staff

ScotRail has urged travellers to check their journeys in the run-up to Christmas with hundreds of trains cancelled.

The train operator revealed that a number of services have been scrapped due to Covid and staff shortages.

On ScotRail's website, more than 100 trains have been cancelled on Monday with further services expected to be hit by the chaos.

Journeys between Scotland's major cities including Edinburgh and Glasgow have been affected.

Customers are now being advised to plan their journey in advance as services are being disrupted.

ScotRail tweeted: “We’re seeing an increase in the number of our staff having to self-isolate due to Covid-19.

“Customers planning on travelling today should check their journeys beforehand on our app or website.”

It comes as hundreds of Scots will be travelling home to see family and loved ones on Christmas Day.

Despite a rise in Covid numbers due to the new Omicron variant, Nicola Sturgeon has not brought in travel restrictions over the festive period.

However, the First Minister has urged people to stay at home and try limit to gatherings to just three households in a bid to stop the spread of the virus.

The new strain became the dominant variant in Scotland on Friday and is spreading across the country with the R number believed to be as high as 4.
