Scotrail forced to change advert over 'potentially misleading' cheap ticket claims

ScotRail has been ordered to change “potentially misleading” adverts which imply its cheapest tickets can be found on its website.

The Advertising Standards Authority told the rail operator to make changes after a former transport chief blew the whistle on them.

George Eckton – a former director of a Scottish transport coordinating body – complained that the public could get lower fares on some routes by splitting tickets at booking offices.

An ASA spokesman said: “Following receipt of this complaint, we assessed the ads and wrote to the advertiser to outline the changes they needed to make in accordance with our rules.”

Eckton said: “I am just an ordinary citizen trying to get a fare system that is fair for all.”

ScotRail said it had been encouraged to amend the wording of its ads to clarify that the prices were the best value offered through its website.

A spokesman said: “We’re working with the ASA to ensure our customer communications is clear, concise and not misleading.”
