Scotrail fare dodger hit with £3000 bill after taking free trains for 53 days

Scotrail have issued the biggest ever bill for unpaid tickets to a passenger in Edinburgh, demanding a sum of over £3000.

The fair-dodger spent 53 days avoiding paying for journeys.

The team at Edinburgh’s Waverley station were alerted to the repeated misuse of the Ticket On Departure option from a ticket machine in Bellshill station for journeys between Haymarket, Slateford and Curriehill into Edinburgh.

Our sister title Edinburgh Live report how the offender would buy a ticket between one of the locations into Edinburgh but instead would collect it and board at Bellshill.

This meant they could get through the barrier at Edinburgh Waverley at a fraction of the cost.

Ticket on departure means you can collect your tickets at the station, either from a Ticket Vending Machine (TVM) or from the booking office.

CCTV footage highlighted a customer’s fraudulent behaviour by boarding at Bellshill over 53 days, they had to pay £3142.90, the largest bill to date.

As ticket conductors return to Scotrail's trains following national lockdown easing, the train company is "putting a stop to fare evasion on Scotland’s Railway with spot checks and penalties for offenders."
