ScotRail COP26 strike averted as union forge last-minute deal ahead of summit

The ScotRail strike over the COP26 climate summit is set to be avoided after a last minute deal was struck.

On Wednesday evening, the RMT Trade Union announced that they had set out a final negotiating position, with demands such as a backdated 2.5 per cent pay rise and an extra payment for staff during the conference.

Sources have now confirmed that an agreement has been reached between the two parties, which will last for one year, the Daily Record reports.

The move should allow for public transport services to continue as normal during the global conference, which is due to begin in Glasgow on Sunday.

Sunday services should also resume in the near future, after services had been affected for months.

The union confirmed the planned industrial action would be “withdrawn immediately” as members welcome a recent agreement on a pay rise.

The Scottish Government and Scotrail imposed a deadline of 5pm on Wednesday for a resolution to the dispute over pay and conditions.

Ian McConnell, ScotRail Chief Operating Officer, said: “We have reached a pay agreement with the RMT trade union that resolves strike action.

“We look forward to Scotland’s Railway playing its part in delivering a successful COP26 next week.”

Mick Lynch, RMT General Secretary, added: "Following further discussions between RMT and ScotRail an agreement has been reached and the proposals have been accepted by the union.

“As the disputes are resolved strike action has been cancelled and RMT members have been advised to work normally."
