ScotRail come out on top in 'World Cup of Train Operators' poll

With people struggling with boredom during lockdown, we've been coming up with more and more imaginative ways to keep themselves entertained.

One rail enthusiast recently dreamed up the 'World Cup of Train Operators' on Twitter in a bid to find out which of the UK's firms were the best.

Pitting 16 of the biggest train operators from across England, Scotland and Wales against each other, the imaginary competition created by travel Youtuber and author Geoff Marshall ( @geofftech ) put it to the public to decide who their favourite was.

Beginning last month, the knock out comp saw a surprise winner, as ScotRail saw off LNER in the final.

The operator had beaten fellow Scottish firm Caledonian Sleeper in the semis.

Other companies that fell by the wayside in the comp included Eurostar, Great Western Railway, West Midlands Railway and South Western Railway.

Incredibly, ScotRail saw over 53% of the vote, with now nearly 14,000 people choosing them ahead of LNER who only 11,917 votes.

Posting on their official Twitter account, the ScotRail social media team wrote: "A decisive win! We're absolutely delighted. We use these polls to test out our content, try new things and have some fun. Commiserations to @LNER, and everyone involved!"

One user joked: "Do they now represent the UK in a Europe-wide competition?"

Another quipped: "When I’m late for work again next week, I can tell my boss , but they won a World Cup of train operators , I’m sure that’ll help."
