ScotRail cancel services as Omicron cases lead to huge staff shortages across country

ScotRail has been forced to cancel a raft of train services after Omicron cases led to staff shortages across the country.

The transport operator axed 'a considerable number of services' after 'a large number' of employees phoned in sick.

It comes as workers either tested positive for Covid, were awaiting test results, or are self-isolating after being 'pinged' as a close contact of a person infected.

Customers are now being advised to plan their journey in advance as services are being disrupted.

ScotRail tweeted: "We've had to cancel a considerable number of services today due to a large number of staff a testing positive for Covid, awaiting test results, or self-isolating after being 'pinged' as a close contact of a person infected with the Omicron variant.

"Please check your journey."

David Ross, ScotRail Communications Director, said: “We’re sorry to our customers who are being inconvenienced as a result of an increase in the number of our staff self-isolating due to COVID.

“We are working flat out to run a safe and reliable railway in difficult circumstances.”

The Daily Record reported on Monday how SNP ministers were being told to 'pull out al the stops' and reopen mass vaccination centres to help with the booster rollout.

Nicola Sturgeon announced last night the covid vaccination programme would be accelerated in response to the rapidly spreading omicron variant of the virus.

However Health Secretary Humza Yousaf today admitted a deadline of Hogmanay would be "extremely challenging".
