ScotRail cancel Edinburgh trains as Covid cases cause huge staff shortages

A number of Edinburgh trains have been cancelled on Monday (December 20) due to staff shortages.

ScotRail have warned those travelling in and out of the capital that coronavirus cases have caused a huge percentage of their workforce to self-isolate.

With the Omicron Covid variant now dominant in Scotland, the rapid transmission rate has seen cases soar in recent days, seriously disrupting some employers.

ScotRail had previously announced they were one of the companies affected, however on Monday the train operator stated they are still extremely low on workers.

On Monday alone, 122 train services throughout Scotland have been cancelled, with passengers urged to check their journey times in advance.

These cancellations include multiple services in and out of the capital, with 60 out of the 122 cancellations being Edinburgh trains.

Anyone who had planned to travel on a now cancelled service has been urged to check the new travel and journey information for their route here.

Speaking on Monday morning, ScotRail took to social media to warn passengers, stating:

"We're seeing an increase in the number of our staff having to self-isolating due to COVID-19. Customers planning on travelling today should check their journeys beforehand on our app or website.
