ScotRail and CalMac launch new partnership linking key services

SCOTRAIL and CalMac have announced a new partnership aimed at improving connections between rail and ferry services.

The agreement between the two operators will focus on creating a more integrated and customer-focused transport network, building on existing collaboration across timetabling, ticketing and passenger information.

David Ross, chief operating officer at ScotRail, unveiled the plans at Wemyss Bay station, where rail services connect directly with CalMac ferries to Rothesay.

He said: "We've signed a new partnership agreement with CalMac and that commits us to working more closely on timetables and connection times on the ticket types that we both sell and also in our investment in our island and rural communities.

"We're looking forward to many more years of working closely with Kalat through this partnership agreement to deliver for all our customers."

A similar interchange exists at Gourock, linking trains with sailings on the Gourock to Dunoon route.

Under the partnership, both organisations will work more closely on coordinated timetables, integrated ticketing options such as Rail & Sail, and improved communication during disruption.

The initiative also aims to reduce barriers to travel, encourage greater use of public transport, and improve the overall passenger experience, particularly during major events or periods of disruption.

Diane Burke, chief operating officer at CalMac, said: “This partnership will strengthen existing work while allowing us to explore new ways of working together to better serve our customers and reduce barriers to travel.

“This is an important step in strengthening the connection between rail and ferry services, helping us deliver a more efficient and joined-up experience for our passengers.”

Both operators say the partnership will place a stronger emphasis on customer insight, joint promotion and better coordination across services, with the aim of making journeys across Scotland’s rail and ferry network smoother and more reliable.
