Scotland weather boost as Easter Sunday hits record high with more sun to come on Monday

Scotland enjoyed its Scotland's record-breaking Easter to get even hotter tomorrow Easter Sunday on record, the Met Office has said.

Temperatures reached 23.4C at Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Garden, beating the previous best of 20.7C set in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, in 2015.

This is still well below the UK's 2011 Easter Sunday record when the mercury reached 25.3C in the Solent, near Southampton.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: "We have got high pressure moving at the moment giving most of the UK a lot of fine weather, this combined with the fact that the high pressure has dominated for the past few days is allowing the temperatures to heat and build.

"It is allowing some record breaking temperatures to be set today and potentially tomorrow."

He also suggested that the temperatures may also be helped by the fact that Easter has fallen a little later in the calendar this year.

And there is more good news for bank holiday revellers as Monday is set for another cloudless scorcher with highs of 22C in Glasgow and 21C in Edinburgh, according to the Met Office.

The UK's warmest Easter temperature was the 29.4C recorded at Camden Square in London on Easter Saturday in 1949.

Met Office meteorologist Dean Hall said that in "stark contrast" to the dry and sunny conditions in the UK, Spain and the Mediterranean are seeing showers and heavy downpours.

He added: "Spain is very unsettled as we go into Easter Monday. There are temperatures of 17C to 16C in Barcelona. There are certainly cooler conditions there compared to the UK."

However, the hot weather in Scotland wasn't all good news as firefighters were called out to deal with a large wildfire in Aberdeenshire.

Around 24 firefighters rushed to tackle the blaze at Rosehearty at around 12.30pm.
