Scotland v New Zealand live: All Blacks break Scottish hearts with dramatic win in Murrayfield thriller

Scotland had their hearts broken by New Zealand once more as Damian McKenzie’s acrobatic late try helped snatch a dramatic 25-17 victory in a Murrayfield thriller.

Scotland have never beaten the All Blacks in 120 years of trying – despite coming close in recent years, notably left to rue their misfortune in a narrow 2017 defeat in 2017 – and it appeared to be the same old story when Cam Roigard scored far too easily for the visitors after just three minutes and they built a 17-0 lead by half-time.

But Gregor Townsend’s side dug deep to come roaring back after the break, taking advantage of New Zealand ill-discipline and a sin-bin to level the contest at 17-17 thanks to Ewan Ashman’s bundled maul try, Kyle Steyn’s scampering finish out wide and a Finn Russell penalty with 20 minutes remaining.

When Wallace Sititi became the third All Black of the day to be yellow-carded on the 60-minute mark, Murrayfield believed but the visitors saw out their man disadvantage without conceding a point before McKenzie arched his back and somehow dotted down in the left corner on 73 minutes and then kicked the game-sealing penalty a few minutes later to leave Scotland bereft once more.

Scotland fall short of historic New Zealand win as All Blacks break hosts’ hearts again

17:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Scotland's search for a first-ever win over New Zealand continues after their spirited second-half fightback ultimately proved fruitless in a 25-17 defeat at Murrayfield.

Gregor Townsend's side went in 17-0 down at the break despite being twice held up over the line.

The Scots roared back to make it 17-17 by the hour mark after tries from Ewan Ashman and Kyle Steyn, and they looked the likelier winners as the match moved into the fourth quarter.

But the All Blacks - who had three players yellow-carded - regained their composure in the closing stages, with a try and a long-range penalty from substitute Damian McKenzie taking the game away from the hosts, who have now failed to win this fixture in 33 attempts over 120 years.

Gregor Townsend speaks to the BBC after a tough defeat to swallow

17:21 , Harry Latham-Coyle

"It’s hard to find the words,” Townsend says. “Really disappointed. The effort that went in was all character.

"The win was there and we needed to kick on when it was 17-17. Outstanding by us but we need to win these games. We need to make that next step.

"I'd love to play New Zealand next week again, because of what we have learnt from that performance."

“It was a tough old Test,” McKenzie said. “The boys started well. They were on top of us for the majority of the second half, but I'm proud of how we finished off.

"Just being patient. Once we had the opportunity to hold the ball, play in the right areas of the field.

"Just a bit of luck I guess [to score at the end]. Really proud of the effort tonight."

33 times now Scotland have tried and failed to beat the All Blacks - it says plenty about how they have developed under Gregor Townsend that they have run them so close of late but that signature win slipped away again - like McKenzie through Blair Kinghorn’s grasp for the crucial score.

FT: Scotland 17-25 New Zealand

It’s the same old story for Scotland in this fixture - close, but no celebratory cigar! The hoodoo continues against the All Blacks, but what character they showed to roar back from a 17-0 deficit to look the likelier winners on the hour mark.

But that took real steel from New Zealand, too, to find a way when they seemed to have collapsed. Fair play to Damian McKenzie, particularly.

One last assault, maybe, for Scotland to salvage some pride. Or not - penalty to New Zealand, and that, after a tap and tonk to touch, will be that.

PENALTY! Scotland 17-25 NEW ZEALAND (Damian McKenzie, 79 minutes)

16:59 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The dagger! The smiling assassin strikes again to surely put this beyond Scotland’s reach!

Superb from Damian McKenzie, battered, bruised and bloodied but nerveless with his strike. Through it sails - the All Blacks will escape Murrayfield again!

Scotland 17-22 New Zealand, 78 minutes

16:57 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Into the final few minutes, and the All Blacks maul does damage again - 15 metres it makes, and drawing a penalty out of Scotland, too.

On comes the tee - Damian McKenzie will look to seal it from 45 metres on the angle.

Scotland 17-22 New Zealand, 76 minutes

How many more chances will Scotland get? They win possession soon after the restart but it isn’t theirs for long, Leicester Fainga’anuku limpeting over the ball to earn a crucial penalty for the All Blacks.

TRY! Scotland 17-22 NEW ZEALAND (Damian McKenzie, 75 minutes)

16:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

My oh my that is some finish! Damian McKenzie was in touch for all money as Blair Kinghorn ferried him towards the touchline, but like a greased weasel he somehow wriggles free.

It still appears as if he’ll topple into touch as he tumbles but McKenzie remarkably keeps his bearings, tiptoeting the touchline to ground in the corner as he flops to floor. Outstanding!

His conversion isn’t there, but the All Blacks lead.

Scotland 17-17 New Zealand, 73 minutes

Down they come...advantage again. Surely they are there? No, Ardie Savea just short!

Away to the left - has Damian McKenzie somehow scored? Blair Kinghorn looked to have him but McKenzie might have contorted to the line.

The mammoth Tamaiti Williams very nearly drags three Scots to the line with him, but the hosts regather well, and survive. Back for the penalty the All Blacks will go.

The yellow card period has elapsed - Du’Plessis Kirifi is on to replace the binned Wallace Sititi.

New Zealand captain Ardie Savea opts for the lineout. Damian McKenzie prods the forwards back into the corner.

Scotland stall the maul - but are offside. New Zealand have advantage with which to work.

Pilfered! New Zealand get to Ewan Ashman’s lineout toss and steal it. They play a few phase on halfway, but don’t really threaten.

What a kick that is! Damian McKenzie with a supreme bit of skill, taking the ball at second receiver and lifting a perfect kick over Kyle Steyn’s head. Into touch it trundles five out - and it’ll be an All Blacks throw, of course, as it is a 50:22.

The All Blacks will just be hoping to survive through the sin bin period, you’d think. Or not! An ambitious cross kick from Beauden Barrett inside his own half just evades a leggy Leicester Fainga’anuku.

Scotland 17-17 New Zealand, 67 minutes

16:46 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Scotland can’t go chasing this too much - the space will surely appear if they are patient. Another well-directed Jamie Dobie box kick is fumbled forward by a contesting Kyle Steyn. Beauden Barrett comes away limping after an awkward landing.

Scotland 17-17 New Zealand, 65 minutes

The All Blacks escape up to the 10-metre line. Just about. But the pressure remains on.

Scotland 17-17 New Zealand, 63 minutes

16:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Come on then, Scotland - surely this is the time. A few box kicks cause bother in the All Blacks backfield but Beauden Barrett just about scrambles the ball back New Zealand’s way. Scottish hands have knocked it on, too - a scrum, New Zealand feed, 10 metres out from their own line.

YELLOW CARD Scotland 17-17 New Zealand, 61 minutes

16:39 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Now then? Is that a deliberate knock on from Wallace Sititi? And, if so, with Kyle Steyn romping up the touchline beyond him even from his own 22, does it merit a yellow card?

It is. And it does! Wallace Sititi is sent to the sin bin and New Zealand are down to 14 players again!

PENALTY! Scotland 17-17 New Zealand

58 mins

Non-stop action at Murrayfield! The pace of this match is ridiculous.

There’s a huge chance for Scotland as Dempsey intercepts the pass and races into the New Zealand 22.

The hosts have the numerical advantage and Russell looks to kick wide but there’s a brilliant covering tackle on Graham from McKenzie.

However, there is a break now as Scotland get a penalty after from Damian McKenzie straying offside.

Russell has the chance to level it and he obliges, splitting the posts easily to make it 17-17!

So close from the hosts! Brilliant work from Roigard to stop Graham scoring in the corner.

Scotland worked it through the hands before Kinghorn drew the defender and slipped in Graham, who evaded the first tackle before knocking on under pressure from Roigard as he went over the line!

55 mins

Close, but not yet for Scotland! They drive forward led by good work from Brown, before Ashman is isolated on the wing but manages to keep the ball with the hosts taking advantage of their penalty advantage.

However, they move to within a metre of the line before Schoeman knocks on.

Changes for both sides as Schoeman, Ashman, Rae and White are replaced by Turner, Sutherland, Millar Mills and Dobie for Scotland.

TRY! Murrayfield erupts!

The hosts move within five points after another superb passage of play!

It stems from clever work from captain Tuipulotu. New Zealand stand up the maul and the inside centre has to come back in, and he does so well, cracking the gain line before the hosts work it wide.

It comes to Kinghorn and he’s got Steyn wide outside him, and he finds the winger with a vital long pass to allow him to cross over!

Russell adds the conversion and we have a game here!

More encouragement for the hosts after winning a penalty, and it’s followed by a good kick from Russell to land the line-out around eight metres from the line.

45 mins

Scotland set the maul early and drive forward before Ashman, at the front of the maul, escapes and dives over!

The conversion takes Scotland within 10 points.

In addition, the All Blacks have another yellow card as captain Savea is sin-binned for dragging down the maul!

43 mins

The hosts win possession straight away after a New Zealand knock-on, before they make it into the 22 after Schoeman breaks the gain line.

The hosts take the line-out and it’s won easily enough, with Berry giving them an advantage before Russell’s kick in-behind the defence is slightly inaccurate and Jordan collects.

Scotland have another chance then from the line-out.

HALF-TIME! New Zealand 17-0 Scotland

16:12 , Chris Wilson

It’s a long way back for Scotland now, especially considering they failed to capitalise on Carter’s sin bin, but the home crowd will have some hope after promising moments in the first half.

However, the reality is that – bar one occasion – when the defence has been tested, it hasn’t quite been good enough so far.

What does the second half have in store at Murrayfield then?

That conversion was the final act of an entertaining half at Murrayfield.

Both sides have played well at times but once again the All Blacks’ intelligence, quality and occasional brute force has been the difference against Scotland.

The hosts face an uphill battle to secure a first win in 120 years against New Zealand!

The New Zealand scrum results in a penalty advantage but they don’t need it, with the ball coming out to Will Jordan before he releases Satiti. The number eight turns on the pace to evade a tackle before returning the ball inside to Jordan, who crosses under the posts.

Great defending from the visitors again as they win a penalty after Ben White was dragged back to his feet from the tackle, and he is pinged for not releasing.

A New Zealand kick ends with a Jordan knock-on but Scotland can’t capitalise as Kinghorn’s long looping pass ends up going forward on the wing, and we’ll come back for an All Blacks scrum.

De Groot has returned to the action for the visitors.

Russell finds touch from halfway and this is a huge opportunity for Scotland now.

32 mins

Promising phases from Scotland here but it ends with a great turnover from the visitors, before we see the first yellow of the game!

It all comes from some superb footwork from Graham, who knocks the loose ball between the legs of Carter before the All Blacks winger takes him down with a deliberate trip.

Nic Berry doesn’t need long on the TMO for that one.

PENALTY! Barrett clips over for another three for the visitors.

A smart kick from Roigard forces Graham back into his own 22 before Clarke drags him into touch, before the All Blacks win the line-out, Scotland are penalised for offside, and the fly half finds the three points.

In the meantime, an early change for the visitors too as Williams comes on for De Groot at loosehead, while Finn Russell is receiving yet more strapping on his knee.

CLOSE! So close from the hosts.

They work it wide to Kinghorn and he dummies before lifting a pass behind him to the onrushing Graham, who is held about a metre from the line!

Some clever work from the visiting defence though as they hold him up over the line to win the goal-line drop-out.

Scrap that, the TMO catches a neck hold on Hutchinson from Taylor and the hosts have a penalty. It’s kicked nearly to halfway and there’s a reprieve for the hosts now, as well as a chance to launch an attack of their own.

13 or 14 phases of brilliant attacking from the All Blacks but the Scotland defence stays firm until they concede a penalty. Great rugby all around there, though the visitors have a penalty well within the 22.

It’s a tap-and-go but they can't make anything of it before the hosts concede another penalty, this one for not moving away. Nic Berry speaks to Scotland captain Tuipulotu as a warning for his side. The next infringement will be a yellow!

Beauden Barrett finds the extra two points easily enough off the tee.

Australia’s Nic Berry is the man in the middle this afternoon, with a South African flavour to the rest of the officiating team. Good guy Beauden Barrett

14:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There is just one Barrett brother involved today with Jordie out of the All Blacks’ tour and Scott sidelined with that leg laceration. The 34-year-old playmaker further underlined his status as a good guy of rugby by helping Ireland’s Tadhg Beirne get his red card rescinded at a disciplinary hearing this week.

Barrett had promised to do what he could to argue that Beirne’s challenge on him had not merited a sending off, and duly obliged with a statement in which he seemed to take as much of the blame for the collision as the Ireland lock. “"The play wasn’t designed for me to receive the ball, and I didn’t expect to be involved,” Barrett explained. “However, Cam (Roigard) passed me the ball unexpectedly.

"I caught it — more by luck than anticipation — and because I wasn’t prepared to carry, my body position was high and not committed with proper intent or force.

"As I carried into contact, I ran into a congested area, hoping Cam would play out the back. Initial contact was front-on and above the shoulder area.

"I take responsibility for entering contact in a high position, as that contributed to the nature of the collision.

"I don’t believe the opposing player could have done much differently — it was a contact sport situation, and fortunately, Tadhg showed good awareness and controlled his force, which prevented a more serious collision.”

Wallace Sititi back in the starting side

14:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It is perhaps appropriate that a flanker named after William Wallace is back in the New Zealand starting side to face Scotland. Wallace Sititi’s parents were big fans of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, clearly able to look over the historical inaccuracies, with dad Semo spending plenty of time in the country across two stints with the Border Reivers.

It’s good to see Sititi given a start, though, after such a captivating breakthrough year in 2024. His form has fluctuated a bit more this but there is all sorts of athleticism in that All Blacks back row today. Ardie Savea needs no introduction and anyone who has watched the Hurricanes over the last few seasons knows the explosiveness that Peter Lakai possesses.

Scottish centres in focus

14:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It is a year since Sione Tuipulotu last pulled on a Scotland shirt, the centre missing the Six Nations with injury and then a popular tourist with the British and Irish Lions during the summer. Usual running mate Huw Jones is sidelined, leaving Rory Hutchinson to step in.

The Northampton back has been in excellent form at the start of the Prem season, and is familiar with new Scottish defence coach Lee Radford, who has been seconded from Saints. That will help him settle back into what looks a beautifully balanced backline - Hutchinson and Tuipulotu are both real ball-players but also have the ability to win the collision as front-line carriers. The All Blacks’ midfield reshuffle might just cause a little more defensive uncertainty, which you can be sure the ever-sharp Scottish strike plays will look to get after in attack.

New Zealand have suffered a double Barrett blow with captain Scott and centre Jordie ruled out through injury. Ardie Savea skippers the side from No 8 with Josh Lord promoted to partner Fabian Holland, impressive against Ireland last week, in the second row, with Wallace Sititi also brought into the starting team.

In the backline, Quinn Tupaea shifts to second five-eighth with Leicester Fainga’anku stationed at 13 and Billy Proctor as centre cover on the bench.

New Zealand XV: 1 Ethan de Groot, 2 Codie Taylor, 3 Fletcher Newell; 4 Josh Lord, 5 Fabian Holland; 6 Wallace Sititi, 7 Ardie Savea (capt.), 8 Peter Lakai; 9 Cam Roigard, 10 Beauden Barrett; 11 Caleb Clarke, 12 Quinn Tupaea, 13 Leicester Fainga’anku, 14 Leroy Carter; 15 Will Jordan.

Replacements: 16 Samisoni Taukei’aho, 17 Tamaiti Williams, 18 Pasilio Tosi, 19 Sam Darry, 20 Du’Plessis Kirifi; 21 Cortez Ratima, 22 Billy Proctor, 23 Damian McKenzie.

Scotland suffered a blow in the week with Zander Fagerson still on the sidelines, the tighthead losing his race to be fit. D’Arcy Rae therefore starts alongside Pierre Schoeman and Ewan Ashman in the front row, while Gregor Brown completes a back row that also includes Matt Fagerson and Jack Dempsey.

Finn Russell and Ben White return to start in the halves, while Kyle Steyn is stationed on the left wing ahead of Duhan van der Merwe. Jamie Dobie and Tom Jordan are the two backs on the bench, with each providing plenty of versatility.

Scotland XV: 1 Pierre Schoeman, 2 Ewan Ashman, 3 D’Arcy Rae; 4 Scott Cummings, 5 Grant Gilchrist; 6 Gregor Brown, 7 Matt Fagerson, 8 Jack Dempsey; 9 Ben White, 10 Finn Russell; 11 Kyle Steyn, 12 Sione Tuipulotu, 13 Rory Hutchinson, 14 Darcy Graham; 15 Blair Kinghorn.

Right, with kick off little more than an hour away at Murrayfield, let’s dig a little deeper into the two teams...

Sione Tuipulotu and Scotland aiming to celebrate Murrayfield's 100th birthday

14:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Sione Tuipulotu and Scotland are relishing the challenge of trying to mark 100 years of Murrayfield by conquering the All Blacks.

The Scots have never beaten New Zealand in 32 attempts over the past 120 years.

And Australia-born captain Tuipulotu knows how significant it would be to finally defeat the most illustrious team on the planet on the day they wear their 'Murrayfield 100' kit specially designed to commemorate a century of Scotland's national rugby stadium.

"It's massive," he said. "When I was growing up in Australia there weren't many times we beat the All Blacks, but now I'm over here we understand how big an occasion this is. I still think the All Blacks are a big part of this sport and playing them is always a massive opportunity.

"I think the feeling in the changing room is excitement to go out and play these guys. We understand what type of team they are and what they bring but we also understand the type of team we are and what we've been building towards.

"I spoke to the boys before about how there are 60,000 people coming to the stadium to watch us and it'd be a damn shame if we don't believe.

"I think that's the most important thing, that when we run out of the tunnel that I look around and I see 22 other guys that believe we can win this fixture.

"It's also 100 years of Murrayfield - we're wearing this (shirt) to commemorate all the people that have played before us in this jersey so it's bigger than the record against New Zealand, it's also the history of Murrayfield that we're thinking about.

"I was at the Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame dinner last week, there were a few people getting inducted. Scott Hastings got up and talked and it was pretty touching to hear those guys that have created successful memories in their eras.

"It was inspiring to listen to those guys because you want to have your own era where you're successful and that's what we're striving towards."

Ardie Savea explains why New Zealand are 'on edge' ahead of Scotland clash

13:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ardie Savea says New Zealand will be driven by a desire to preserve their proud unbeaten record against Scotland at Murrayfield.

The All Blacks have never lost to the Scots in 32 meetings over the past 120 years, a scenario the captain believes will sharpen the minds of the visitors.

"You don't want to be the first team (to lose to Scotland), so that puts us on edge a bit," said back-rower Savea.

"We also understand Scotland's mindset as well and how much it will mean to them tomorrow. It builds appropriate fear and we don't want that to happen.

"We've prepared well, done what we can do through the week, now it's just about turning up and playing."

"It's an amazing place to play," he said of Murrayfield. "Scotland are a quality side. The last three games we've played it's been within eight points.

"It's no easy feat (to beat them), so we understand the challenge ahead and we're really excited to come here and play.

"They've got some world-class players in their team, so that poses a threat.

"We've just got to turn up and nail our game."

Darcy Graham is psyched for the challenge of trying to help Scotland defeat New Zealand for the first time ever after playing his part in a near-miss against the All Blacks three years ago.

The sides have met 32 times in the past 120 years, with two draws and 30 defeats for the Scots.

The most recent of those encounters offers some hope for Gregor Townsend's men, who - with the aid of a Graham try - led their illustrious visitors 23-14 after an hour in 2022 before succumbing to an agonising 31-23 defeat.

In the only other meeting between the teams during Townsend's reign, the Scots lost by just five points in 2017.

"Growing up, you always want to play against the All Blacks so you don't get any bigger occasions," Edinburgh wing Graham said. "It's going to be a special Murrayfield game.

"When you see the four (autumn) games, the one that stands out is the All Blacks, that's the one you want to be starting in.

"The last two games were close. I just wish we had the opportunity to play them more often and really test ourselves.

"I feel like if we played them more, that confidence would increase and we'd end up believing in ourselves even more, that we can go toe to toe with these boys.

"A Scottish team has never done it before so hopefully we can do it now. We can go toe to toe with anybody, but we need to be at our best for a full 80 minutes.

"They're no mugs, they're an incredible team with the chemistry they've got behind them so they're going to be coming here as favourites. Everyone knows we've got that monkey on our back, never beating them before, so it'll be a very special occasion."

No Scott Barrett for New Zealand

13:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There’s no Scott Barrett for New Zealand today after a laceration to the leg of the All Blacks skipper in Chicago last week. We wait and see if he will be fit for the England game in seven days’ time — but it was confirmed this week that the Crusaders lock will miss most of the next Super Rugby season on a non-playing sabbatical as his workload is managed.

It really is an unwelcome record for Scotland - 32 matches, two draws, 30 defeats. But Gregor Townsend’s squad have made plenty of history over the last few years, ending long losing runs at Twickenham, in Paris and elsewhere - and there is genuine belief they can finally crack the All Blacks.

They couldn’t, could they? It is 120 years since Scotland first took on New Zealand in an international rugby match and still victory over the All Blacks eludes them, but having run them close in recent years, hopes are high that this could be a famous, history-making Murrayfield day.

Kick off in Edinburgh is at 3.10pm GMT.
