Scotland to go into full lockdown as pressure grows on UK government to act

Scotland will go back into a full national lockdown from tonight, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed.

The SNP leader said that from midnight tonight, there will be a legal requirement for people in Scotland to stay at home -with exceptions for excercise, essential journeys and caring.

Making her statement today, Ms Sturgeon said: "I am now more concerned at the situation we are in now than at any time since March last year."

The move will pile more pressure on Prime Minister Boris Johnson who is facing repeated calls to bring in a full national lockdown, with cases spiralling out of control.

Ms Sturgeon has acted today but says she believes Scotland may still be several weeks behind areas like London in terms of Covid cases.

She added: "We have an opportunity to act quickly to avert things deteriorating to that level, but we must act now."

"We know that delay or prevarication when it comes to this virus almost always makes things worse."

She said under the new rules that it will only be acceptable to go to work if that work cannot be done from home.
