Scotland to be hit with thunderstorms and heavy flooding as Met Office issues weather warning

A flood alert has been issued for large parts of the country as Scotland is set to be battered by heavy thunderstorms.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is urging residents in the west and central areas to be aware of increased surface water throughout the day on Friday.

Heavy and thundery showers are expected across several regions including the Scottish Borders, Ayrshire, Fife and the Lothians, particularly in the afternoon and evening.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow weather warning for the west coast of Scotland, including Glasgow, which begins at 4pm.

They are warning of slow moving heavy showers and thunderstorms which may lead to some disruption including difficult driving conditions.

A statement from SEPA said: “A flood alert has been issued for West Central Scotland.

“Heavy, thundery showers are likely to develop in the region through Friday afternoon and evening.

“The greatest risk will be if the showers occur over urban areas or the transport network.

“Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property.”
