Storm Francis to batter Scotland bringing heavy rain and floods this week

Heavy downpours and strong winds are set to batter parts of Scotland this week as Storm Francis sweeps over the country.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain on Tuesday and early Wednesday.

Forecasters are anticipating floods and gusts of around 50mph in south-west Scotland, Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, Lothian Borders and Strathclyde as the latest storms descends on the UK.

The bad conditions could cause heavy disruption on the roads and on public transport, while some communities may be cut off by flooded streets.

It comes after Storm Ellen battered the country with torrential rain and wind as it swept in from the Atlantic.

This week, rainfall is to reach 20-40 mm, with as much as 60-90 mm for parts of south-west Scotland, particularly over high ground.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Storm Francis will bring another spell of very wet and windy weather during Tuesday and early Wednesday.

"Strong east to north-easterly winds are also expected to develop, with gusts of 50 mph affecting exposed coasts and hills."

The Met Office has warned heavy rain could lead to difficult driving conditions, road closures and flooded homes and businesses.

Fast flowing or deep floodwater is also possible, causing a danger to life.

It comes after Scotland was hit with 'biblical' floods two weeks ago after huge thunderstorms battered the country.

Some eastern parts saw around 80-90mm of rainfall in just a few hours.
