Scotland to be blasted by Arctic freeze as temperatures plunge to -6C

Scotland is gearing up for a big freeze tonight as temperatures are set to plummet as low as -6C as a cold air blast moves across the country.

Clear and cloudless skies on Friday will cause conditions to drop to below freezing, bringing particularly chilly weather and severe risk of frost.

Forecasters say a cold front is moving across the country, with parts of the Highlands and rural areas to see between -4C and -6C overnight.

On Saturday, clouds will descend bringing patches of rain and even some risk of snow flurries over hills in northern parts of Scotland.

Met office spokesperson Oli Claydon said: "There's been a lot of interest in Scandanavian blast recently, it's really a cold front moving through the UK with colder air.

"Daytime temperatures aren't changing and the sun is out more during the day, so we're seeing 6C to 8C and maybe up to 10C. We won't notice a difference in temperature.

"At nighttime with clear skies, we'll be able to see the difference of that cold air mass.

"Temperatures will drop between -4 and -6 in sheltered and rural spots with frost risk. Even some urban areas will be affected with Aberdeen to see -2 overnight."

It comes after Scotland faced a chilly night on Thursday, with temperatures plunging to -7 in Braemar and -5 in Kinloss, Moray.

The Met Office tweeted: "Brrrr! Cold air has swept across the country bringing a frosty night for many."

Scotland’s weather forecasts were dominated by warnings for snow, wind and rain during the opening months of 2021.

Several inches of the white stuff landed over some days, while floods rocked a number of rural communities in recent weeks.

Temperatures also plummeted to as low as -22C during the peak of the cold snap in February.

However, Scots have been enjoying higher than average temperatures across the country over the past few days.
