Scotland to be battered with torrential rain as Met Office issues weather warning

Scots have been warned to brace themselves for two days of ‘heavy and persistent’ rain with flood alerts issued by the Met Office.

Forecasters have placed a yellow warning across large parts of western Scotland and the central belt which is due to run from 6pm on Sunday.

The stormy weather is expected to last until at least 6pm on Tuesday with a significant amount of rain falling in the 48 hour period.

In a statement, the Met Office said: “Following a period of heavy rainfall on Saturday night, further outbreaks of persistent and at times heavy rain will affect western Scotland from Sunday evening until Tuesday evening.

“During this period 80-100 mm of rainfall is expected to fall quite widely, with the potential for 150-250mm over the highest ground.”

They have urged people to expect flooding of businesses and homes while travelling on the roads will also be more treacherous due to surface water.

Bus and train services are also expected to be affected with commuters warned that journey times will likely take longer.

Areas affected by the Met Office weather alert include Strathclyde, the Highlands and Eilean Siar, Tayside and Fife.
