Scotland to be battered with heavy rain as yellow weather warning and seven flood alerts issued

A number of flood alerts have been issued as forecasters predict heavy rain to fall in Scotland over the next 24 hours.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has handed out seven alerts for flooding across north and south eastern parts of the country.

Experts at the Met Office have also issued a yellow weather warning for rain over the rest of Friday, with adverse conditions expected to continue into Saturday morning.

Around 60mm of rain could potentially fall in large parts of the country during a 24-hour battering of showers.

Tayside, Fife, Grampian, Highlands, the Western Isles, south west Scotland and the Borders are expected to be the worst hit areas.

Scots have been urged to allow more time for travel as transport services are expected to be heavily disrupted during this period.

Concerns have been raised by forecasters following recent snow showers, in addition to this new band of heavy rain showers.

Homes and businesses could be flooded as a result of the adverse conditions.

Rain is expected to clear on Saturday afternoon.

A forecast from the Met Office reads: “Further persistent rain heavy at times, developing on Friday afternoon, continuing on Friday night.

"Further rainfall accumulations of 20 to 40 mm are expected quite widely and over some hills and mountains 60mm may fall.”
