Scotland to be battered by torrential rain as Met Office issues weather warning

Parts of the country are being warned to brace for torrential downpours, strong winds and flooding tomorrow.

A yellow weather warning for heavy rain has been issued by the Met Office, which will come into effect in the early hours of Wednesday morning and will remain in place all day.

Forecasters are predicting rainfall of up to 70-80mm in some areas accompanied strong southerly winds.

The alert covers Strathclyde, with Dumfries and Galloway and the Isle of Skye set to be hit with the deluge.

Angus, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, Aberdeenshire, Moray and the Highlands will also be affected by bad weather.

Scots are told to expect disruption to journeys due to surface water, spray on roads and potential flooding of homes and businesses.

Bus and train services will likely be affected as Traffic Scotland warns people to take care in affected areas.

A Met Office statement for tomorrow's warning adds: "Heavy rain will persist throughout Wednesday, with some disruption due to surface water expected.

"A band of rain will push in from the west during the early hours of Wednesday, this will persist throughout the day with accumulations of 40-50 mm widely expected within the warning area.

"Potential for 70-80 mm in Dumfries and Galloway and across Skye. This will be accompanied by strong southerly winds."

It comes after Scotland saw temperatures plummet over the weekend.

The country woke up to a cold start on Saturday with frost after a chilly night.
