Scotland to be battered by snow and ice as temperatures plummet to -10C

Scotland is set to be battered by snow and ice in what could be the coldest night of the year.

The Met Office has issued several yellow weather warnings tonight and into tomorrow morning as temperatures look set to plummet to -10C.

As a result there could be disruption to road and rail services due to the severe weather.

Overnight temperatures will range from -10C in sheltered areas of Scotland, to between -1C and -2C in coastal areas.

A snow and ice warning is currently in place for Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Islands and Strathclyde until 11.59pm tonight.

That warning has now been extended to 11am tomorrow morning.

A second warning for snow and ice will come into force at 9pm tonight for Tayside, Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders, and will last until 11am on Tuesday.

There could be road closures, power outages and a loss of mobile phone coverage in the area affected due to the adverse weather.

Meanwhile, a third warning will come into effect at 7pm tonight for ice.

It will affect the Strathclyde and Borders areas.

Met Office Meteorologist Simon Partridge said: "There's potential that we could see the coldest night of winter so far on Monday night going into Tuesday morning.

"It depends if we have clear skies over snow for long enough.

"This leads to cold temperatures, and we'll certainly have two cold days.

"Sleet and snow showers are forecast for Monday, which will bring icy patches to low ground and snow to higher ground."
