Scotland to be battered by 'severe gales' as forecasters issue weather warning

Scotland is expected to be battered by severe gales as forecasters issue a yellow weather warning.

The Met Office has put a warning in place for the north west of the country from 5pm on Tuesday.

Winds could peak to highs of around 75mph in some parts of Scotland, which is expected to cause disruption to the roads and transport services in the area.

The Western Isles and the Highlands are expected to be the worst impacted by the conditions.

Gusts are also expected to remain high across the rest of Scotland, with winds failing to dip below 40mph over this period on Tuesday.

Forecasters are also anticipating heavy rainfall to sweep eastwards across the country from around 6pm tomorrow evening.

A forecast from the Met Office reads: “Southerly gale of severe gales are expected for a few hours during Tuesday evening, bringing gusts of 65 to 75mph.

“Winds will decrease from the southwest towards late evening.”

Scotland’s weather forecasts have been dominated with warnings for snow, wind and rain during the opening weeks of 2021.

The early year cold snap returned for a brief spell last week, as temperatures in the north of Scotland reached lows of -7C.

But it had nothing on the temperature reading in Braemar during the early part of February. The thermostat dropped to a low of -22C in the Aberdeenshire village during the peak of the severe winter weather last month.
