Scotland to be battered by gale force winds as forecasters issue danger to life warning

Weather forecasters have issued a danger to life warning as winds of up to 80mph are expected to batter Scotland.

The Met Office is anticipating strong gusts to hit much of the country on Monday afternoon.

A yellow weather warning for wind has been issued for both Glasgow and Edinburgh, in addition to much of the Highlands and islands.

The severe weather could bring disruption to transport - some bridges could be closed while public transport services could be affected by cancellations.

The Met Office has put the warning in place for large parts of the country for Monday (Met Office)

The Met Office have listed 'danger to life' in their list of 'what to expect' from today's strong winds.

The warning reads: "There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris."

They are also advising that buildings could be damaged as a result of the gale-force winds.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Forecasters at the Met Office said: “A spell of very strong westerly winds is expected through Monday afternoon, and lasting into the first part of Monday night.

“Gusts of 55-65mph are expected widely, with gusts of 70-80mph possible in more exposed parts of the Hebrides and north-west Scotland.

“Winds should moderate from the west late Monday.”
