Scotland to be battered by 80mph gusts as Met Office issue yellow weather warning

Scotland is set to be battered by winds of up to 80mph over the weekend as the Met Office issue a weather warning.

The yellow warning has been put in place to last from 6pm on Saturday, February 8 to 11.59pm on Sunday for the entire country.

As a result, there could be huge delays to road, rail, air and ferry services right across Scotland.

There is also a small chance that some roads and bridges could close due to high winds.

It's believed some homes and businesses in rural locations could be hit by power cuts with potential to affect the mobile phone coverage.

Gusts during the weather warning are expected to reach around 50 to 60mph, however exposed coasts and hills could see winds of 70 to 80mph.

As well as the strong winds it's expected there will be heavy rain in some parts.

There could be gusts of up to 80mph in some places (PA)

A Met Office statement read: "Very strong winds are likely across much of the UK later Saturday and through Sunday.

"Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are likely across many inland areas, with gusts 70, possibly 80 mph around some exposed coasts and hills, especially in the north and west.

"Heavy rain will be an additional hazard, especially over western hills.

"Winds of this strength across a wide area have the potential to produce disruption to transport, along with some coastal impacts, especially in the west."
