Scotland to bask in unseasonably warm weather on Hogmanay as heat plume arrives from Portugal

Scotland will continue to bask in unseasonably warm weather this week as a large plume of heat arrives from Portugal.

A high pressure front moving up from the Azores, off Portugal, arrived this weekend and will see warmer weather over the coming days.

Today will see the mercury reach 12C well above the UK average for December.

STV weatherman Sean Batty said 11C on a December night is what would normally be expected on an April afternoon in Scotland.

Into Hogmanay on Tuesday there will be sunny spells with a clear night forecast in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and as far north as Aberdeen - however temperature will drop to 6C.

However, it is not set to last as on Thursday, a band of rain will arrive in the north-west and sweep southwards across Scotland through the day. Becoming colder and more showery into Friday.

Temperatures should become mild, especially in northern Scotland. Looking further ahead, there seems to be something of a northwest/southeast split.

The majority of the wet and windy weather seems to be confined to the northwest, with spells of heavy rain and strong winds, according to the Met Office.
