Scotland team predicted for Israel clash as Nathan Patterson form leaves Steve Clarke with World Cup conundrum

It feels like we're playing Israel every international break at this stage but it's seldom been more important than now.

There's a World Cup playoff spot at stake and a win for Scotland against a familiar foe would go a long way towards securing it.

It hasn't been a groundbreaking qualification campaign from Steve Clarke 's side but it's been a functional one and a win away at Austria puts us in a strong position to qualify.

Most of the positions in the side are nailed down with the midfield trio of Callum McGregor, Billy Gilmour and John McGinn looking well balanced.

But the return of Manchester United star Scott McTominay throws a spanner in the works and gives Clarke the type of headache that all managers love.

He could slot into the back line instead and that seems a plausible option - especially with Grant Hanley absent.

But Kieran Tierney has one of those back three places locked down and the likes of Jack Hendry and Liam Cooper have made strong cases to start too.

McTominay is one of Clarke's top performers so it's likely the boss will fit him in somewhere - but where will it be?

The debate over who should start at right-back also rumbles on, with Rangers talent Nathan Patterson making a strong case to be first choice.

However, Motherwell man Stephen O'Donnell has been a mainstay of the Scotland set-up under Clarke, and he could stick with his trusted defensive option.

Record Sport have had a go at picking Scotland's strongest XI from the players available.

Scotland predicted XI vs Israel

Gordon, Tierney, Hendry, McTominay, Robertson, Patterson, Gilmour, McGinn, Adams, Dykes.
