Scotland team confirmed as Rangers star keeps starting spot ahead of 'Well ace in Moldova

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke has named his starting XI to take on Moldova in World Cup 2022 qualification Group F's crucial penultimate fixture.

Rangers right-back Nathan Patterson retains his spot in the team ahead of the more senior option, Motherwell captain Stephen O'Donnell.

Leeds United skipper Liam Cooper returns to the centre of defence while Che Adams leads the line on his own, with talisman Lyndon Dykes suspended.

Lanarkshire representation comes in the starting XI through Kieran Tierney this evening, while O'Donnell, David Turnbull, Kevin Nisbet, Lewis Ferguson and Kenny McLean are all on the Scotland bench.

It doesn't get much bigger for the national team as victory in Chisinau would secure a play-off place at next winter's major tournament.

The group's final match against Denmark on Monday is still big in terms of play-off seeding, but Clarke's men can only worry about that once the job is done in Moldova.

Exactly one year ago today, Scotland booked their place at Euro 2020 against Serbia.

Now they will look to mark the occasion by taking a huge step towards the major tournament in Qatar.

Scotland XI: Gordon; Patterson, Hendry, Cooper, Tierney, Robertson; McGregor, McGinn, Gilmour, Armstrong; Adams.

Subs: Clark, McLaughlin, O'Donnell, Souttar, Brown, McKenna, Turnbull, Nisbet, Ferguson, McLean.

Moldova XI: Namasco; Jardan, Posmac, Bolohan; Revenco, Rata, Dros, Ionita, Marandici; Nicolaescu, Ginsari.

Subs: Celeadnic, Calancea, Iovu, Rozgoniuc, Spataru, Cociuc, Bogaciuc, Iosipoi, Puntus, Cojocaru, Arhirii, Cotogoi.
