Scotland team confirmed as Motherwell ace starts ahead of Celtic star to break club record

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke has named his XI to take on Denmark tonight as Motherwell captain Stephen O'Donnell starts ahead of Celtic star Anthony Ralston to break the club's national team cap record.

The right-back is currently level with Fir Park legend George Stevenson on 12 caps for Scotland, but he'll make it 13 by featuring against Denmark tonight.

Rangers' Nathan Patterson has been first choice in recent matches but he is suspended for tonight's final World Cup 2022 Group F qualifier against the Danes.

Celtic full-back Anthony Ralston was given a late call-up but he has to settle for a place on the bench.

Ryan Christie comes into the XI as star striker Lyndon Dykes fails to reach full match fitness for tonight's encounter.

Scotland beat Moldova 2-0 on Friday to secure a play-off spot for the major tournament in Qatar next winter. But who they will play in those 2022 fixtures will be determined by what happens in tonight's match.

Win, and Scotland will be seeded. But if Clarke's men lose to Denmark, they face the possibility of an unseeded draw and more difficult route to World Cup 2022.

Clarke has also had to factor in seven players being one booking away from missing next year's vital play-off match. There are two Lanarkshire men in the starting XI - Kieran Tierney and O'Donnell - while Kenny McLean, David Turnbull, Kevin Nisbet and Lewis Ferguson are on the bench.

Denmark have already qualified for the tournament in Qatar and are looking to finish Group F with a 100% record. Here are the teams from a sold-out Hampden tonight.

Scotland XI: Gordon, O’Donnell, Robertson, Souttar, Tierney, McGinn, McGregor, Adams, Christie, Gilmour, Cooper.

Subs: Clark, McLaughlin, Ralston, Porteous, McKenna, Armstrong, Turnbull, Nisbet, Ferguson, Brown, McLean.
