Scotland suffer New Zealand heartache as elusive wait for first win goes on after Murrayfield sting

Unlucky Scotland rallied from 14-0 down but suffered late New Zealand heartache as they missed out on their first ever win over the All Blacks after suffering a 31-23 defeat.

Gregor Townsend's warriors almost downed the All Blacks after scoring 23 unanswered points but a late fightback from New Zealand left them heartbroken. The record now reads 30 wins and two draws as Beauden Barrett and Co rallied late to leave a sold-out Murrayfield crestfallen. They believed the shock was on but it ended in agony - just like it did in 2014 and 2017 despite stubborn resistance on those occasions.

Scotland supporters feared the worst but were on their feet when Darcy Graham's stunning interception was capped off by the man himself as he led the All Blacks on a merry dance before touching down for six points. The All Blacks were on the ropes and Scotland added to their lead with a trio of Finn Russell penalties. It was 23-14 and fans started to dream the improbable was on. But hopes were dashed as New Zealand landed a 10-point blitz. Jack Dempsey's yellow card cost Scotland and that allowed New Zealand to turn up the heat.

The mercurial Russell conjured up some of his magic but it proved in vein as debutant Mark Telea netted a late try to add gloss onto a challenging today in the Scottish capital.
