Scotland Street School: Plans submitted to open nursery within Charles Rennie Mackintosh building

Plans have been submitted for Scotland Street School Museum to revert to its original purpose of delivering education while continuing to operate as a much-valued museum.

Under the £2.8m multi-use proposals, a nursery would open within the historic Charles Rennie Mackintosh-designed building, alongside the potential future inclusion of a digital learning hub.

A report detailing the plans has been submitted by Glasgow City Council's Executive Director of Education Services to the Education, Skills & Early Years City Policy Committee - who will review it at a meeting next week.

The report proposes developing the ground floor of the Museum to become a nursery to provide earning and childcare to 3 to 5 year olds - with the nursery having access to the rear boys’ playground which would be developed as part of the planned improvements.

The nursery would be registered to provide 60 3-5 years full time equivalent places.

The museum would also be retained alongside an appropriate level of access for visitors to enjoy the exterior of the building.

The report summary notes: "Re-introducing an education provision in the form of early years’ accommodation will signal a return of the building to a new form of its original use.

"Re-thinking the use of the building offers new ways of interpreting the architecture and history of the building, while retaining its important role in the city in terms of cultural tourism and its unique Charles Rennie Mackintosh focus.

"It will also allow the important function of delivering schools workshops by Glasgow Museums’ staff to the children of the city to be maintained."

The report will be discussed by the Education, Skills & Early Years City Policy Committee on Thursday of next week.
