Scotland Street blaze: Firefighters confirm fire began after tyres went up in flames

Firefighters have confirmed that a south side fire began after a large number of tyres went up in flames last night.

Fire crews were alerted to the blaze just before 8pm on Sunday (August 25).

And while no one was injured in the incident, thick plumes of black smoke could be seen across the city.

Dramatic footage showed firefighters tackling the blaze at the abandoned Howdens Factory warehouse, close to the old Scotland Street school.

Three fires crews rushed to Scotland Street where they battled the flames for over an hour.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted at 7.58pm on Sunday, August 25 to reports of a fire within a vacant building in Glasgow.

"Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and an aerial appliance to Scotland Street, where crews extinguished a fire involving a large quantity of tyres.

"There were no reported casualties.

"Crews left at 9.10pm."
