Scotland staycation lockdown rules confirmed by John Swinney

Deputy First Minister John Swinney has said people in the central belt who are living under the heaviest coronavirus restrictions can still go on holiday.

Swinney said staycation plans can “take their course”, but urged people to be respectful when going to areas with lower levels of covid.

Nicola Sturgeon yesterday announced her latest plan to get to grips with rising levels of the infection.

Although every part of the country will be affected by new curbs, heavier restrictions will apply in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Arran, Lothian and Forth Valley health board areas.

All pubs and restaurants in these areas will have to close from 6pm on Friday.

People were also advised against travelling outside their own health board area if they do not need to.

On BBC’s Good Morning Scotland show, the presenter said there was confusion about advice to people who live in the Central Belt in relation to travelling and their holidays.

Asked if they can still go on holiday, Swinney replied: “Yes, but we ask people to take the greatest of care. That’s the principle piece of advice. Holiday plans can take their course, but people must exercise great care.

“And, of course, where they are going to areas of the country which may have, for example, a lesser prevalence of coronavirus, to be respectful of the fact that we don’t want to be any way responsible for the spread of the virus in other communities.”
