Scotland star Richie Gray expects a massive test against Wales

Richie Gray expects "massive amounts of physicality" from Wales in their Six Nations clash today, and says Scotland need to be right on it if they are to continue their good form in this year's competition.

A famous 11-6 win over England, their first at Twickenham since 1983, opened the campaign successfully, and Gregor Townsend's side now entertain Wayne Pivac's men, who themselves opened their tournament with a 21-16 win at home to Ireland.

East Kilbride man Gray, who is back in the Scotland set-up after an absence of two years and seven months, is loving every minute of it, but says a tough test awaits in Edinburgh this afternoon.

The big Glasgow Warriors lock enjoyed that win in London and told Scottish Rugby media: "It was incredible. We went down, we were very well prepared, training was excellent, coaching and the messages from the coaches was bang-on.

"We went down in a good place, the atmosphere and the buzz we created at the game meant there was a really good buzz and the team performed so well.

"We just looked so composed in tough situations, and it was a fantastic win.

"Obviously it had been a long time since we had won down there, so it was great to finally achieve that, and the biggest thing is how we back it up, going into this weekend, which is the most important thing at this moment in time.

"With Wales you're always going to get physicality - a massive amount of physicality in the Welsh side.

"If you look at the game at the weekend there, the pace at which they played the game, some of the hits that were going in, it was incredible, so we will need to be on the money this weekend and we know the challenge that awaits us."

Gray, brother of fellow lock Jonny, says Scotland are operating under a 'squad first' mantra, which means even those who aren't playing are working their socks off to make sure everybody is ready.

He said: "There has been a great buzz about the place.

"I'm really enjoying being back as part of the international set-up, and the win at the weekend was the cherry on top of the cake.

"It has been a crazy three weeks, but I've loved every minute of it.

"One of the things I worked on at the start of my career was around the set-piece, the dark arts of rugby as they say.

"I was just trying to be the best team-mate that I can be for the other guys, that's something I've learned is really important, how you can support other players and the team.

"There's a fantastic group and everybody works hard for each other. Obviously there's competition for places, everyone wants to be part of it.

"Our leadership group, they sat down and came up with the phrase 'squad first' so everyone is trying to do the best for the squad and the guys who are not involved are preparing the team so well.

"Obviously they will be disappointed, but the way they're preparing the team for the weekend is outstanding, and it's some of the best training I've been involved in."

Scotland v Wales kicks off at Murrayfield at 4.45pm.
