Scotland star Kenny McLean ready to be penalty hero again in Serbia

Cambuslang star Kenny McLean is ready to be the penalty hero for Scotland again tonight as the national team look to end 22 years of hurt on the international stage.

The Norwich midfielder sent the Scots into the Euro 2020 play-off final against Serbia with the winning spot-kick in last month’s penalty shootout win over Israel.

It could go all the way in Belgrade as well and McLean says he will be ready to step up, if required, and hopes to play his part in making history.

He said: “I think the momentum has been gathering for a long time now and things just seem to be coming together.

”It will be the highlight of most of the boys’ careers if we can take us back to the good old days of qualifying for tournaments.

”We’ve got the squad to do it, there’s no doubt about that, it’s up to us to put the performance in to take us there.

“Of course (penalties) is a possibility. There is no doubt about that.

“I am sure we will practise penalties this week once again. I would like to get it done before then but if it takes that then I will take it.

“We are under no illusions we are going to go there and win the game comfortably.

“It is going to be a tough game against a very good team with a lot of quality.

“But if I look around about me and see the squad we’ve got we can’t go and fear them.

"We will show them plenty of respect because they deserve that.

“We need to be confident, we need to be everything that will take us to the next stage.

“It is going to be a very tough game; demanding, aggressive, everything.

“We need to be ready for that and I have got absolutely no doubt we will be.”

McLean’s winning penalty gave the country a huge lift in these dark times and he admits it’s been playing on repeat since that magic moment at Hampden last month.

The 28-year-old added: “I keep playing it again, so I keep having it refreshed in my mind. I’ve watched it plenty of times, I’ve been sent it a lot.

“It was obviously good at the time, but all our attention is on Serbia.

“We find ourselves in a position that we can go and do something special.”
