Scotland squad announced as Motherwell captain makes cut but two teammates miss out

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke has named his squad for two crucial World Cup 2022 qualifiers against Moldova and Denmark - with Motherwell men Liam Kelly and Tony Watt missing out.

Fir Park captain Stephen O'Donnell has been included in Clarke's plans this month, meaning he will have the chance to become the club's most-capped Scotland player if he features in either match.

There was debate over an additional striker being named in the squad, with main forward Lyndon Dykes suspended for the Moldova match.

But despite being the Premiership's joint-top scorer, Watt has not been selected by Scotland's head coach. Stoke City's Jacob Brown has earned his first call to the national side.

Kelly meanwhile has been replaced by St Johnstone keeper Zander Clark. There are six Lanarkshire men in total involved this month; O'Donnell, Lewis Ferguson, David Turnbull, Kevin Nisbet, Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean.

Victory over Moldova next Friday would seal a World Cup play-off match next March. Then a game with Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark rounds off Group F proceedings.

Scotland have won their last four qualifiers in succession and there is a feel-good factor around the national team after dramatic wins over Israel and Faroe Islands last month.
