Scotland set for snow and freezing temperatures as warm weather spell to end

Parts of Scotland are set for snow and temperatures below freezing as a spell of wintry weather will return this week.

A flurry of the white stuff will move across the country over the next few days with some areas experiencing temperatures below 0C.

According to the Met Office, colder weather and wintry showers in the far north are expected on Tuesday with periods of snow moving south as we reach this evening.

Periods of snow and hail showers are likely for north and east parts of Scotland tonight with a risk of icy conditions. Temperatures will fall to near freezing in many areas and as low as -1 in parts including Dingwall and Braemar.

Most areas of Scotland will struggle to hit 8C throughout the rest of the week, with Wednesday seeing the most extreme of the cold weather.

As we reach the end of the week and head into the weekend, the Met Office expects the cold front to continue.

Rain, sleet and snow is set to clear as we reach Thursday morning but wintry weather is likely to return for parts of the country throughout Thursday afternoon, evening and into Friday.

Temperatures are set to feel a little less chilly as we head into Saturday, according to the Met Office.

Alex Burkill, a Met Office forecaster, told the PA news agency: “Wednesday will be the most extreme in terms of wintry weather, as a cold stream of air will start to push southwards bringing unpredictable wet and windy conditions, even snow or sleet.

“It will be markedly colder than what we’ve just seen, daytime temperatures falling by half, and some areas will even struggle to hit 8C (46.4F), which will signify the biggest change in conditions.

“Overnight into Thursday and Friday, many areas will fall considerably lower than freezing, towards minus 4C (24.8F) and minus 5C (23F)."

The cold blast comes just days after Glasgow experienced higher temperature than Barcelona.

But Scots will need to pack away the sun cream for now as the weekend saw the last of the warm weather for at least the next few weeks.
