Scotland's sunshine to be shattered by 'heavy rain' as Met Office issue warnings

Scots heading out may want to swap the shorts and T-shirt for a raincoat, as storms are set to shatter the sunny weather. The Met Office has issued two separate yellow weather warnings for rain on Sunday, June 18, and Monday, June 19, with parts of the country facing disruption from "heavy rain" and flooding.

The bout of wet weather is a result of poor conditions migrating north from England, as parts of the country were issued alerts yesterday. Beginning at noon today until 9pm, the majority of the affected area is in south and central Scotland, including Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Locals in these regions are set for up to 25mm of rain paired with thunder in a three hour span, with a 40-60mm possible in other places. The warning also says a staggering 80mm may be seen in a couple of parts of the country.

Moving to Monday, a yellow warning from midnight until noon will see this area of bad weather become more widespread, impacting much of the west coast and the North East, including Aberdeen, Dundee, and Stirling. While thunder is initially possible, rainfall will be the most hazardous, with the same amounts predicted as the previous warning.

Both alerts are warning of transport delays including rail and bus cancelations, road closures thanks to excess road spray causing difficult driving conditions. There is also the risk access to some communities impacted due to flooding and a small chance of power outages and building flooding.

Here's what you should know about Scotland's latest weather warnings, including areas affected.

Scotland's yellow warning for rain - Sunday

A yellow weather warning is in place in the south of Scotland (Met Office)

The south of Scotland has been placed under a yellow thunderstorm warning for Sunday, June 18 from noon until 9pm.

The Met Office says: "A large area of heavy rain will move northwards across northern England and into southern Scotland during Sunday evening. Whilst some thunder is possible, heavy rain is likely to be the main hazard with 15-25 mm of rain likely widely in 3 hours, and with 40-60 mm possible in places.

"One or two locations could see 80 mm or more, although this is a very small likelihood in any given place. Some localised flooding and disruption is possible as a result."
