Scotland's sub-zero cold snap continues with more snow forecast as Met Office issues weather warning

Scots are being warned to expect icy conditions underfoot as more snow and sleet is expected across the country.

The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning as temperatures remain below zero after a recent spell of wintery conditions.

Motorists are being urged to take extra caution when travelling between 6pm on Saturday, January 9 and 11am on Sunday.

Rain, sleet and snow are expected to batter the majority of the mainland including Glasgow, the Lothians and the central belt.

A Met Office statement read: “Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are expected this evening and overnight leading to a risk of icy stretches on untreated surfaces, especially where snow has been melting during the day.

“Further ice is possible across central Scotland as the skies clear later in the night.”

Temperatures are reported to have dropped as low as -15 in Scotland overnight on Friday sparking travel chaos on the rail network.

The bitterly cold temperatures caused equipment to fail on several train routes sparking early morning delays in the Highlands.

Meanwhile, overhead lines in the tunnel between High Street and Glasgow Queen Street stations were affected by icicles on Saturday morning which caused the power to trip.
