Scotland's star fly-half Finn Russell axed from Six Nations opener after 'breach of team protocol'

Finn Russell has been sent home from the Scotland squad for next week’s Six Nations opener against Ireland due to “a breach of team protocol”.

The bombshell news has been revealed today in a statement by Scottish Rugby.

It’s unclear exactly what has happened, but the breach occurred during this week’s training camp in Edinburgh.

The 46-cap outside-half will now head back to Paris to link up with his club Racing 92.

There has been no comment on whether he will rejoin the Scotland squad after the Ireland clash. Their second game is against England at Murrayfield on February 8.

A Scotland team spokesperson said: “Stand-off Finn Russell will play no further part in preparations for Scotland’s Six Nations opener against Ireland, having been disciplined for a breach of team protocol during the week’s camp in Edinburgh. He has returned to his club.”

It’s a major blow for Gregor Townsend’s side as they prepare for the February 1 Championship opener in Dublin.

Russell, 27, has been in outstanding form for Racing 92 and has been a key figure in Scotland’s best performances over the past couple of years.
