Scotland's nightclub rules and 'vertical drinking' explained as lockdown changes

As Scotland's so-called 'Freedom Day' set to take place in just a matter of days, there has been confusion this week over whether punters can stand up while drinking or wear masks while dancing.

From Monday next week almost all legal requirements around Covid-19 in pubs, nightclubs and restaurants will be scrapped - however this doesn't mean the end of lockdown rules altogether.

Nicola Sturgeon announced that mask-wearing and taking contact details for Track and Trace purposes would still be in full effect at all venues.

The phrase 'vertical drinking' has been thrown around this week to add to a long list of pandemic words we've learned over the past year after Deputy First Minster John Swinney told Good Morning Scotland that pub-goers wouldn't be allowed to drink "vertically".

This refers to standing up by a bar rather than sitting at a table for those who have been left as confused as everyone else.

He also said masks would be a requirement while dancing in nightclubs – which is against World Health Organisation guidance.

However, now in a dramatic U-turn, Scots will be able to prop up at the bar while having a drink and will not be required to wear a face covering on the dance floor from next week.

Here is everything we know so far...

When will nightclubs reopen and what are the rules?

Nightclubs will reopen on Monday, August 9 on Scotland's so-called 'Freedom Day'.

Nightclubs and late night venues were forced to close in March 2020, meaning they will have been shut a total of 28 months or 507 days by Monday, August 9.

Do I need to wear a mask?

It looks like clubbers won't have to wear masks on the dance floor, according to Scotland’s National Clinical Director Jason Leitch.

Punters will also be able to stand up at the bar and drink thanks to the new updated rules.

Do I need to have a vaccine passport for nightclubs?

Late night venues will still have to collect the contact details of customers, according to the Scottish Government.

Further details have yet to be released, including whether there will measures such as queuing systems.

Boris Johnson announced that proof of full vaccination would be needed for entry into nightclubs and other venues with 'large crowds' by the end of September.

It is not known if the Scottish Government will take a similar approach.

Can I have a drink standing up?

Yes! Scots will be able to prop up at the bar while having a drink - tables don't have to be booked in advance either although we're unsure if people can just stand in general in a venue or whether it has to be at the bar.
