Scotland's most famous cakes and bakes as Scot Peter Sawkins scoops GBBO win

In case you missed it, this week saw Edinburgh's Peter Sawkins become the first Scot ever to win the Great British Bake Off.

Yeah, we were surprised that more Scots haven't won as well but we are incredibly proud none the less.

As a nation known for its sweet tooth, its no surprise that we have some star bakers in our midst.

Over the centuries we've created some long lasting bakes and cakes that truly deserve some recognition, so to celebrate Peter's win here are some of the most famous.

Clootie Dumpling

A traditional sweet treat that is most closely associated with the festive season.

Many Scots will have fond memories of their grandmothers or their mothers making this pudding, which takes its name from the cloth (cloot in Scots) sack that is used to make it.

A gently spiced steamed pudding with dried fruits, it's best served with custard or ice cream and a wee dram.

Black Bun

This deliciously dense and rich fruit cake is often used for the ritual of first-footing, when a dark-haired male is expected to deliver it alongside some coal, salt and a bottle whisky at Hogmanay.

The fruit cake wrapped in shortcrust pastry is relatively easy to make and is ideal who like a lot of flavour.

Dundee Cake

The first of our regional cakes is closely linked to the city of Dundee and the marmalade trade.

Produced in the city and the east coast since the early 1800s, the cake features Seville orange peel marmalade alongside Spanish almonds and sultanas.

Ecclefechan Tart

Named after a village in Dumfries and Galloway, these little creations are made using a simple pastry shell, filled with dried fruits, cherries and various nuts.

Selkirk Bannock

Though to once have delighted Queen Victoria, the Selkirk Bannock is a Scottish favourite.

Famously made by artisan bakers Alex Dalgetty & Sons, it's a deliciously sweet bread made using sultanas and lashings of creamy butter.
