Scotland's most affordable area for home buyers sees Ayrshire dominate market

Home buyers in Ayrshire are getting more bang for their buck, according to a new report.

For the region has been named the most affordable area to buy homes in Scotland.

Five of the county's local towns have made the top 10 in a list using a house price-to-earnings ratio.

This three bed property will set you back just £70,000 in Cumnock (Ayrshire Post)

Ayrshire dominates the list complied by Zoopla, with Kilbirnie and Cumnock ranking in third and fourth place respectively.

Stevenston, Irvine and Girvan all feature in the top 10 most affordable towns.

Beith has also seen a positive shift in its affordability.

The top five most affordable towns in Britain are all clustered around Scotland and the north-west of England.

Shildon in County Durham retains its position as the most affordable town in Britain.

In Cumnock, you could currently snap up a three-bed terraced house for just £70,000.

And a two-bed property in Irvine could also be snapped up by bargain hunters for £75,000.

To calculate which areas are the most affordable, Zoopla analysed house price-to-earnings ratios, based on a two-earner household on the average salary for the local area.

Izabella Lubowiecka, researcher at Zoopla, said: “The north-west and Scotland dominate the most affordable areas list once again this year, with relatively modest pricing and stronger earnings in some areas making a home move more accessible for many.

"The data also shows that for homemovers on average salaries, mortgages are also more affordable, especially if homeowners have built up some equity in their current property.

"These levels of affordability in some localities will be welcome news for homeowners looking to move into a larger home especially as the current lockdown restrictions start to ease."
