Scotland's latest Faroe Islands trips: Vogts, near misses and tight encounters

Stars from Lanarkshire are in Torshavn tonight as Scotland look to go one step closer to a World Cup 2022 play-off spot when they take on Faroe Islands.

It's the nation's fifth trip to the island country and perhaps the most important.

Victory in this Group F qualifier will mean that a win over Moldova next month would seal a play-off spot as Scotland look to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

Six Lanarkshire men are with head coach Steve Clarke for this match, including Kieran Tierney, Kevin Nisbet, Stephen O'Donnell, Lewis Ferguson, Kenny McLean and David Turnbull.

Here's what happened on Scotland's previous trips to the Faroes.

07/06/95 - Faroe Islands 0, Scotland 2

Scotland's first adventure to Faroe Islands came way back in 1995 when Craig Brown - the former Motherwell manager - lead the team to a 2-0 win.

Billy McKinlay and John McGinlay netted inside the opening 30 minutes to secure a routine Scotland victory. The next two trips would not be as kind...

05/06/99 - Faroe Islands 1, Scotland 1

While not a victory for Faroe Islands, this was still a shock as Brown's side stumbled in this Euro 2000 qualifier - a tournament they failed to reach after making the 1998 World Cup.

Captained by Motherwell's 1991 Scottish Cup winner Tom Boyd, Allan Johnston's first half goal looked to be enough to avoid a slip-up. But Hans Fródi Hansen struck three minutes from time to stun Scotland.

07/09/02 - Faroe Islands 2, Scotland 2

If the 1999 draw against the Faroes was a shock, this encounter was a disaster. John Petersen netted twice in the opening 15 minutes to hand Faroe Islands a comfortable cushion in the latest Euros qualifier between the two teams.

It was a dreadful night for Bertie Vogts' side which was hammered for the display. Former Motherwell star Paul Lambert and Barry Ferguson found the net to save some face and snatch a draw.

06/06/07 - Faroe Islands 0, Scotland 2

Scotland didn't return to Faroe Islands all guns blazing in the nation's last trip to the island, but they got the job done with little fuss.

Shaun Maloney and Garry O'Connor netted on the road to Scotland suffering qualification heartbreak, again, in the quest to reach Euro 2008. Motherwell manager Graham Alexander featured at right-back.
