Scotland's historic win at Twickenham will be tarnished over players failure to take a knee

Scotland’s win at Twickenham was an historic result that will be rightly recalled with pride by supporters for years to come.

It ended a dismal run of almost 40 years without a win at the home of English rugby.

So it’s a shame that achievement appears tarnished after some Scotland players failed to take a knee before kick-off.

The gesture has become a symbolic gesture in the battle against racism and has been observed before every Scottish Premiership football match this season.

Just four of Scotland’s starting team took a knee on Saturday.

Head coach Gregor Townsend has insisted that he “100 per cent” backed his players after several were criticised.

But there’s since been no adequate explanation from rugby bosses over why this was the case.

The SRU says it’s up to individual players – but footage of the incident suggests a breakdown in communication meant some were unaware of the pre-game running order.

Regardless, this was a terrible look and a controversy that could easily have been avoided.

Whoever is to blame, this is a PR disaster for Scottish rugby.

Those in charge of the game need to take ownership of this debacle and ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Fans want to celebrate an exciting team on the park and not be forced to defend their heroes on social media.

Murrayfield bosses must not drop the ball again.
